For high-end applications running in the cloud, it turns out the CPU itself is the new bottleneck. To address that issue, Intel (INTC) has launched the Intel Xeon processor E7-8800/4800 v3, which in addition to providing access to 18 cores and DDR4 memory also includes support for ways to invoke multiple levels of cache memory directly on the processor.

Intel Transactional Synchronization Extensions (TSX) enable software running on these processors to access multiple levels of cache memory in parallel to increase the number of transactions that can be processed at any given time by a factor of six.

Among the vendors moving rapidly moving to take advantage of these capabilities are SAP and Databricks. In the case of SAP the company will shortly release a service pack 10 update to the SAP HANA platform that makes use of TSX. As is now always the case with SAP, Mike Eacrett, vice president of product management for SAP HANA at SAP Labs, says this capability will first show up in the cloud implementations of SAP HANA managed by SAP and then be added to the on premise version roughly three quarters later.
