Don’t Let the Heat Drive You Batty!
Did you know that bats are starting to come out of hibernation right now? They will be looking for new roosting spots and enter homes to form summer maternity colonies, escape extreme attic heat, or find winter hibernation spots. bat season in homes generally peaks between June and October.

What does this mean for you and your pets?
In the United States, bats are the most reported animals with rabies. And because bat teeth are incredibly tiny, a bite can easily go unnoticed.

How to protect your pets:
Keep your pets up-to-date on their rabies vaccination.

If you find a bat in your home:
Remove all animals and people from the room where the bat is located, Do not touch the bat with your bare hands.
Reach out to your local Animal Control, county health department, or a wildlife expert to have the bat retrieved for testing. Bats are a protected species and it is illegal to kill, harm, poison, or trap them.
Seek medical advice and treatment for you and your pet.
It’s recommended that your pet gets a rabies booster after the encounter, contact your veterinarian.
Your healthcare provider may also recommend that you pursue post-exposure prophylaxis treatment.
Once the bat is safely contained or removed, thoroughly disinfect any areas the bat may have landed on using a solution of 1 part bleach to 10 parts water.
It is also highly recommended to give your pet a bath with pet shampoo to wash away any residual bat saliva on their fur.
