A look back at one of the CRA’s earliest historic preservation efforts. The 1939 Monterey House, now home to the Delray Beach CRA offices, was rescued from demolition and relocated to 20 N. Swinton Avenue.

Historic preservation has always been at the heart of the CRA’s mission, and this photo is a reminder of just how far back that commitment goes.

In 2012, the Delray Beach CRA partnered with artist Cheryl Foster through its Call to Artists program to bring “Endurance” to Libby Wesley Plaza at West Atlantic Avenue and SW 5th Avenue. The 12-foot aluminum and glass mosaic sculpture was created as a tribute to the resilience of Delray Beach’s African American community and the generations who helped shape the city’s history.
Inspired by Foster’s own artist statement, the piece reflects the strength and endurance that people carried with them from West Africa to America — a spirit that helped build strong families, neighborhoods, and communities. Today, “Endurance” stands as a lasting reminder of the perseverance and contributions of the African American pioneers who helped build Delray Beach.

The Historic Wellbrock House at 22 N. Swinton Avenue has been recognized as a Delray Beach Property of Distinction with a Historic Merit Award. 🏡

Built in 1937 and designed by Samuel Ogren Sr., the first registered architect in Delray Beach, the house was facing demolition before the CRA stepped in to relocate and restore it. Today it serves as CRA office space and stands as a testament to what is possible when historic preservation is a priority.

A look back at the installation of the Gateway Feature at the intersection of I-95 and West Atlantic Avenue. Completed in 2013, the six 30-foot mural columns were designed by textile artist Michelle Newman with direct input from the Delray Beach community, reflecting the city’s rich history and cultural heritage.

The project was funded largely by the Delray Beach CRA, with additional support from the Florida Department of Transportation, and continues to welcome visitors to downtown Delray Beach to this day.
