This Black History Month, we honor A. Tennyson Miller, a true trailblazer in education. In 1954, Miller became the first Black student to enroll at the University of North Texas, joining the doctoral program in education at a time when opportunities for African Americans in higher education were extremely limited.

Before UNT, Miller was already a dedicated educator, teaching, coaching, and serving as a high school principal in Texas. His commitment to learning and leadership didn’t stop there; he later worked with the U.S. Office of Education to support school desegregation and was active in professional organizations advocating for teachers and students.Miller’s courage helped pave the way for future generations of Black students at UNT and across Texas.

Today, his legacy lives on through scholarships and honors that continue to inspire students to break barriers and pursue excellence.

Let’s celebrate his life, his achievements, and his lasting impact on education.✨
