Sound design is the craft of creating and shaping sound to serve an emotional, musical, or narrative purpose. At its core, it involves either generating sounds from scratch using synthesis or transforming existing recordings through processing and effects. With synthesizers, you start with simple waveforms like sine, square, or saw waves and sculpt them using filters, envelopes, modulation, and distortion to build entirely new tones and textures. Alternatively, you can work with recorded audio, manipulating samples by pitching, stretching, chopping, layering, or resampling them until they become something completely different. In both approaches, the goal is to move beyond raw audio and intentionally design a specific character, mood, or impact.

Sound design appears everywhere, from film and games to modern music production, where it shapes everything from cinematic atmospheres to basses, drums, and transitions. It is not just a technical process but a creative one that focuses on feel, texture, space, and storytelling. Rather than simply choosing sounds, the designer actively invents them to fit the moment, crafting elements that feel heavy, bright, intimate, or massive depending on the context. Any time a sound is built, altered, or customized to better serve the experience, that process is sound design.
