For this month’s , meet Paloma! 📚🖋️

Paloma graduated with a degree in English with a concentration in Professional Writing and Rhetoric and a minor in Human Development and Family Studies, this last spring. As a first-generation student, Paloma learned to navigate the college system while being a mom and working full-time.

She started at MSU Denver in 2009, when it was still Metro State College. MSU Denver offered an accessible, affordable path to higher education and made her feel she belonged as a Latina student.

Her most memorable experiences are the connections she made here and abroad in Seville, Spain. Those connections opened doors to opportunities like speaking at the First-Gen Initiatives graduation ceremony and writing her first grant for her senior project. With the support from the English department, her proposal awarded her $25,000 to support student initiative in Alternative Education.

In 2015, her time abroad, through ISA (International Studies Abroad), was a transformative experience. While studying at the University of Seville, she interned at a local secondary school while living with a host family, immersing herself in the culture. She visited Madrid, Toledo, Malaga, Ronda, and different parts of the city of Seville, as well as other parts of Europe like Portugal, Vienna, and Austria. These experiences broadened her global perspective and led to lifelong friendships, some who even attended her wedding in 2022.

Paloma’s goal is to become a grant writer for the public education system to obtain funding towards student success. She is passionate about advocating for the BIPOC communities and Spanish-speaking families in the school district. “As a Spanish speaker, I want to be a person they see in their schools that they can relate to,” Paloma said. “Something I didn’t have for myself.”

Paloma leaves us with this advice: “Get involved! Professors are here to help you succeed; lean on them!” And “If you have the chance to study abroad, DO IT! You get to leave your heart in another city that you will always want to return to.”
