Each gait has a unique rhythm and footfall sequence adapted for different speeds, energy levels, and terrain. These gaits are not random but rooted in evolution, efficiency, and biomechanics. The walk is the slowest with each foot landing independently in a steady four-beat rhythm. As speed increases, canines may shift into the amble or pace, which are less common but useful for conserving energy. The trot, a symmetrical two-beat gait, is often the most efficient for covering long distances. Canter and gallop are progressively faster and more dynamic, used for bursts of speed, agility, or pursuit.
