This mode of street art and promotion in some cases has existed throughout at least since the late 80's or early 90's. Originally slap taggers would use postal service labels, particularly Label 228 where they would draw their art on the label and place stickers across the city. While there are a still plenty of artists who still do that, the ability to print stickers has made the practice widely accessible and the community of taggers has grown exponentially.
