Pardon the late post! In May, we celebrated Asian-American Heritage Month! Some of the greatest pieces of American media have come from Asian-American minds, hands, and visions; the films we have selected here speak to that sentiment. In the last decade or so, there has been a rise in Asian representation in American media, and much of that has to do with the box office success of Crazy Rich Asians. The directors of Parasite and Everything Everywhere All at Once pointed to Crazy Rich Asians as paving a way for Hollywood studios to see that Asian stories can not only be compelling, but commercially successful as well. Hopefully, we will see even more films like Past Lives and Minari come out of Hollywood as studios invest in Asian creatives and stories.

a mother in recovery.
Read what she wrote in her first workshop and her last.

First Session: Carrying Poem by Kayla

I carry with me pain and misunderstanding.
I drop that off and pick up the delusion of real happiness.
Lost in a void I’ve made my home,
lost in the void so long I don't even realize
there's another place in my journey to go.
Sometimes I even think I’ve made a void within the void.
Carried too long the pain of my past but also been gone in the safety of a lie
so long I don't know who to get back to what’s true and what’s not.

Last Session: Now by Kayla

I have carried myself through the fire
and now have emerged as beautiful as a phoenix.
My wings will carry me into the next chapter:
fully cloaked in an unbeatable armor, sturdy.
I carry the water of life on my head
ready to dip in at any time and replenish my soul.

For this will be a forever journey of growth
and I will be sure to never let myself go.

We've completed an 8-week long creative writing workshop for 5th grade students at Ashley Elementary, a Title 1 school in the East Colfax neighborhood of Denver. Swipe through to see photos, read the students' poetry, and hear about how this workshop boosted self-confidence, provided a sense of community, and taught them skills they can use for dealing with big emotions.
