My little girl…
has finished pre-school. And while I haven’t given this milestone much more than a passing thought for other parents in my lifetime, I’m simultaneously encouraged and devastated by what I’ve witnessed….

I’ve watched moms, dads, and grandparents continually show up for their kids. Drop-offs and pick-ups to include laughter and tears depending on the day. Parents, sometimes exhausted from the night before, quietly rooting for one another…sometimes fostering deeper connections, giving the kindest “good mornings” and compliments to their children’s classmates.

I’ve seen the most genuine and sincerest smiles of grown men and women as they listen to adorable conversations of four and five year olds, or witness mildly aggressive and unprompted hugs as a greeting or goodbye.

The thoughtful concern of a child when they see someone in the group having a tough time, and needing a little extra attention from their comforting grownup. The beautiful and heartbreaking understanding that we all have tough days sometimes.

I’ve observed the sadness and frustration of little minds when someone isn’t playing nice and the patience of adults knowing this is part of learning and growing up for both kids. I’ve been amazed at the gentle correction of an invested teacher knowing they have a completely separate life, full of their own frustrations and concerns outside of the classroom.

My child’s heartache from a true comprehension that they won’t be returning to their favorite school, with familiar faces in the same way anymore…..
And knowing that this very real grief is somehow good and helpful for them and their development.

This has been one of my favorite chapters…with a glimpse of humanity I hope to see more of….
My wife and I will always be rooting for those kids and their families. 🫶🏼
