We have built an independent reading package for adult Spanish learners following our last Beginning class and in preparation for the next one.
This is the next class:

This is the book for the next class that comes with the class (but you have to have it shipped to you):

And here are the two reading packages we built -- in order of difficulty -- for true beginners and late / false beginnings to rapidly expand your vocabulary. The object is to read 100-150 pages per week, which studies have shown are the amount of reading necessary to jump a level. If that's your goal -- to improve dormant (I took Spanish in high school but...) or if you are in our classes and want to jump from beginning to our next intermediate class in the Fall, these are easy pleasure reading at the beginning level to broaden your vocabulary and it's a curated collection of books we really like.

True Beginner Package: $73.15 for 8 books (5% off)

Late Beginner / False Beginner package: $66.74 for 7 books (5% off)

Attached are the images and videos I made so you can see the inside of each book and decide which one fits your level best.

Whether or not you take the next class, keep us posted on your progress. If you want to keep personal track of your progress note how many times you use the glossary in each book and if you use it less as you progress through the series of books and keep a running tally.

Lower your standards for video quality. ;-) I made a video for my own students and am sharing it. -- Karen Rowan

Things you may not have known about Bad Bunny:
1. Hurricane Maria was in 2017. Benito was 22 years old. “Una Velita” (the little candle) and El Apagón (the blackout) are about the impact on the island and the people.

2. In Yo perreo sola - 2020 — during quarantine - this is the song in which he is in a dress. Why? Two things — in the video is a background that says “ (not one woman less) a movement that started in Argentina against gender-based violence and machista violence. After 14 year old Chiara Paez was beat to death by her boyfriend who did not want her to keep her pregnancy the movement surged across Latin America. There is an average of one femicide per week in Puerto Rico. (Further context..in 2021 in the entire U.S. 4970 women were murdered by intimate partners - 34%. 6% of the 17,970 men were killed by intimate partners.)
The second thing is that in February of 2020 Alexa Negrón Luciano was brutally murdered after social media posts harassing her for using a women’s restroom in a restaurant. BB appeared on the Tonight Show wearing a T-shirt that said “Mataron a Alexa, no a un hombre con falda.” Clothes don’t have a gender. We made up those rules and then kill people for not following them.
So why will BB wear a dress at the Super Bowl? Because women should have the freedom to do what they want to do. People should have the right to wear what they want to. I Twerk Alone is about a woman who won’t be controlled. He defends her against men who would harass her and think she is dancing for them.

3. Turista - is about a tourist who comes and enjoys but doesn’t really understand or get to know the reality. The video is of him cleaning a beachfront vacation rental after guests have abused and trashed it, leaving the AC and TV on on an island that still struggles with blackouts. Lo que pasó a Hawaii is about gentrification that is making it impossible for Puerto Ricans to live on the island, so they leave for the mainland always longing for home.

4. Mientras uno está vivo uno debe amar lo más que pueda is a line from Baile Inolvidable (Unforgettable Dance) and is also in the short film Debí Tirar Más Fotos (I should have taken more pictures). While one is alive, one should love the most one can. That is the central message.

5. You will see a Puerto Rican flag. 🇵🇷 Puerto Ricans know that a Gag Law in 1948 made it illegal to own, fly, display or wear the PR flag. Punishment? 10 years in prison. It is an act of resistance.

If BB at the Super Bowl in a dress is unAmerican, consider how many men in your life would go to these extremes to use his power to advocate for women? Why was Debí Tirar Más Fotos álbum of the year? Why did he do a 31 concert tour generating income only for Puerto Rico? If you want to know why he is beloved, these are only some of the many reasons.
