To get to 150, it takes some repair!

This copy of The Poetical Works of Thomas Hood has done both.
Awarded as a school prize in 1877 to a student named Bessie Johnston for industry and good behaviour, it has had a journey. Along the way, someone carefully repaired the binding instead of replacing it, preserving not only the poetry but the evidence that this book mattered to someone.

Thomas Hood wrote poems that ranged from playful to deeply compassionate. His best-known work, The Song of the Shirt, helped bring attention to the struggles of working-class seamstresses in Victorian England, reminding readers that poetry can be both beautiful and socially powerful.

Sometimes the book itself is more than a holder of verse. They are objects that have traveled through classrooms, homes, libraries, and generations before arriving here.

This one has already met many people.

Who will be next?

📚 If you could ask a question of someone who owned a book before you, what would it be?

Tiny Joy and Big Hair

This copy of Raising Mentally Strong Kids by Daniel Amen and Charles Fay focuses on helping parents build resilience, confidence, and emotional well-being in children. Published in 2020, it’s filled with practical advice grounded in neuroscience and decades of parenting experience.

But tucked between its pages was something the authors never intended.

A prom photo from the era of bouffants!

This photo was even marking the chapter on potty training, which made us laugh a little. Maybe it was intentional. Maybe it was the closest thing within reach during a piddle emergency? 🤷

What unexpected things have you found in a book, or lost in the pages?
