Des Moines Public Schools Cell Phone Use Policy & Purpose: At Des Moines Public School District (DMPS), we are committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment that empowers every student to achieve their full potential. We recognize that cellphones and personal devices are integral parts of our students' lives, serving as tools for communication, learning, and personal expression. Our goal is to implement a district-wide cellphone policy that respects these needs while minimizing instructional distractions, supporting mental health, and enhancing educational outcomes. The purpose of this policy is to establish clear guidelines for the use of cell phones within Des Moines Public Schools. These guidelines are intended to ensure a focused, respectful, and productive learning environment for all students, with emphasis on minimizing any disruptions to instructional time. For the purpose of this policy, “cell phone” includes all cellular connected devices, including, but not limited to cell phones, headphones, gaming devices, and smart glasses.
Cell phones, earbuds, headphones, and game devices cannot be used at any time during the school day, in compliance with DMPS Middle School policy and state laws. Cell phones will be turned into period one teachers at the start of the day and locked away until period 7 teachers pass them back out at the end of the day. All devices should be turned off when turned in at the start of the day. All cell phones will be safely locked in a secure location of our building during school hours with student's name, period 1 teacher name and period 7 teachers name attached. Violation of this policy will lead to the student turning their phone, earbuds, headphones, or game device into an adult, or requiring parents to pick up the phone/earbuds/headphones/game device. Parents and families who need to contact their students during the school day can call the main office at 242-7774. Students needing to call home during the day may ask to use the phone in their classroom or main office. Please refrain from texting and calling students during class time.

Hi Scarlets,
Happy last Friday with the kiddos! The ELL Team would like to thank everyone for making our ELPArty last night a success. We wouldn't have been able to have all of these kiddos invited to the event if it wasn't for your great work.
It was very heartwarming to see our students being celebrated by our community and their peers. We saw students were coming in with their parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents, uncles, aunts; we saw parents taking time off to see their child receiving awards; we saw our community partners, district personnel, and board members cheering for our students; we saw students were clapping and rooting for their peers as they walked up. It was a great evening and a true reflection of what being a Scarlet is all about.
Big, big, thank you to all of you, your support and your amazing classrooms were also reflected in these kids' achievements and successes. Also, shoutout to our amazing BFLs for helping us to connect with our families, Ms. Sandmann for the lovely decorations and her quick (very professional) serving hands during the reception alongside Ms. Camacho, Ms. Rosie for helping out with everything, Ms. Beath for her strengths unloading the drinks from the auditorium to the cafeteria, and our custodial team who helped us setting up.
I might not have said this enough, but thank you, thank you, thank you! Thank you for everything that you do.
