Doulas and mamas are using their voices.

During Detroit City Council budget hearings, Trusted Messenger doulas from Motor City Doula Association and Detroit mamas, housing advocates and activists made public comment calling for Detroit’s Right to Counsel law to be fully funded in the new budget cycle.

The program is working! Right to Counsel is helping prevent thousands of evictions every year and keeping Detroiters connected to legal support, housing stability, and dignity. Yet, this life-changing program was not made a priority in the City of Detroit budget.

Too often, mamas facing eviction are invisibilized. Our stories are overlooked. Our children, our homes, our stress, our survival, and our wisdom are brushed off.

But we will not be silent.

We will continue to stand up, tell our stories, and demand that Detroit fully fund and protect Right to Counsel. Trusted Messenger doulas are helping make sure families know their rights, know where to turn, and know they are not alone.

We will not stop fighting to keep Right to Counsel for Detroiters.
