In the summer of 1996, Michigan Opera Theatre’s education director Karen VanderKloot DiChiera mounted summer youth programs at the theater – Learning at the Opera House.

This built on the Community Programs Department, founded in 1978, which included statewide touring of children’s operas and operatic scenes, education initiatives, and residences in school districts.

The wait is over! We are thrilled to announce Detroit Opera’s 2026/27 Season. We kick things off in November with three powerful performances of Puccini’s Tosca, where love, jealousy, and murder collide on stage. In March, experience the timeless heart of Fiddler on the Roof in Crystal Manich’s lush, historically authentic staging, fresh off its acclaimed 2025 premiere at Cincinnati Opera. Then, in April, prepare for a one-night-only immersion into Philip Glass’s Satyagraha, a meditative masterpiece about Gandhi, reimagined as a breathtaking light- and soundscape by James Blaszko.
