THE CREATIVE MIND CONTINUES ALWAYS TO TEST THE PARAMETERS OF CONVENTIONAL KNOWLEDGE, FOREVER IN PURSUIT OF NEW VISTAS.

TRYING TO UNDERSTAND LIFE, DEATH, THE TOTALITY OF EXISTENCE, AND THE LOGIC OR ORDER THAT GOVERNS OUR BEING IS THE FORM FROM WHICH ART EXTRACTS ITS MEANING. THE BELIEF THAT ALL MATTER EXISTS AND OPERATES IN THE SERVICE OF NATURE IS THE BASIC TENET SHAPING THE CONTENT OF MY IMAGERY. THE STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS OF LINES, SHAPES, COLOR, VALUE, TEXTURE, AND CONTENT ARE EMPLOYED AS ECHOS OF HUMANKINDS MOTIONS IN A TIME/SPACE EQUATION.

I PERCIEVE MY WORK AS CONTENT MESSAGE BEARERS WHOSE LANGUAGE IS FORMED THROUGH THE UNIQUE PHYSIOLOGICAL EMPLOYMENT OF THESE MEANS. PAST AND CURRENT INVOLVEMENT WITH PUBLIC ART HAVE SHIFTED THE FOCUS OF MY WORK DRASTICALLY TO THE CUSP WHERE SPACE, AESTHETICS, AND UTILITY MERGE INTO A CONSUMMATE ENERGY. SYSTEMS OF OPPOSITES OPERATE IN JUXTAPOSITION AS OPTICAL ENERGIZERS WHERE THESE FORCES ACT IN HARMONY AS DYNAMIC CONSTRUCTS OF CONCEPTUAL ENVIRONMENTS."

In Honor and Memoriam of Charles William McGee, December 15, 1924 – February 4, 2021

During Black History Month 2025, Design Studio 6 - Detroit is proud to celebrate Detroit's black-owned and operated arts and cultural spaces. DS6 is one of two former art studios of the legendary artist Charles McGee, developed by his daughter April McGee Flournoy in 2019. This sacred space invites creatives and art enthusiasts to celebrate their creative history, legacy and pursuits.

Design Studio 6 will exhibit art collections, memorabilia and artifacts of Charles McGee and local artists' artwork inspired by the artist's life and work. We ask his friends, former students and the creative community to share their creations and stories for inclusion in an exhibit from February 1 - 9, 2025

McGee’s career spanned 7 decades. He remained true to his practice informed by ‘the energy of life’: interdependence, equality, and connection among all living things. These ideas were the driving force in his life as he moved across artistic styles and media with curiosity over his lifetime. Through his work, McGee encouraged peace, balance, and harmony, with the desire to make the world a better place to live.
