W-sitting is a position many young children naturally move into while playing, but staying in this position too often can place extra stress on the hips, knees, and ankles over time. It may also limit trunk rotation, core strength development, balance, and the use of both sides of the body together during play. Some children prefer W-sitting because it gives them a wider base of support, especially if they have low muscle tone, decreased core strength, or challenges with balance.
Encouraging alternative sitting positions like criss-cross, side sitting, long sitting, or using a small stool can help support stronger posture and motor development. If your child frequently returns to W-sitting, gentle strengthening and movement activities can help build the muscles needed for more stable positioning.
⭐ Try these W-sitting exercises and movement ideas from a pediatric OT to encourage core strength, balance, and body awareness in a fun and supportive way. Small posture changes during play can make a big difference over time.

Gestures continue to play an important role in development during the preschool years, even as children become more verbal.
Between ages 3–5, children often use gestures to help tell stories, express emotions, follow directions, and strengthen social interactions with others. Pointing, nodding, shrugging, using facial expressions, and showing objects to others all support communication and connection. These nonverbal skills work together with language development and can give important insight into a child’s social and emotional growth. Some children may still rely heavily on gestures while building verbal skills, while others may struggle to use gestures naturally in social situations. Encouraging pretend play, songs with motions, storytelling, and face-to-face conversations can help strengthen both verbal and nonverbal communication.
Paying attention to gestures during the preschool years can help caregivers and educators better understand how a child is communicating and interacting with the world around them.
