Verses of the Week:
Psalm 33:11-12
The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations. Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.
Hymn History:
“My Country, ’Tis of Thee” ( #698 in Rejoice Hymns) While translating “Gott segne Sachsenland” (“God Bless Our Saxon Land”) from German into English, Samuel F. Smith was inspired to write a patriotic hymn to the same tune. “America” was first sung by the Juvenile Choir at a Sunday School Rally on July 4, 1831. Smith was born in 1808 in Boston, became a preacher, college professor, hymnist, writer, and missionary advocate; yet, he is best known for the patriotic hymn he wrote as a student at 23 years old. (Morgan, 105) (Morgan, Robert J. Then Sings My Soul: 150 of the World’s Greatest Hymn Stories. W Publishing, 2011.)
