The Jeep: Born in War, Built for Everyone — And Why I Still Miss Mine
Some vehicles get famous from movies. Some from TV shows. But there are only a handful you recognize instantly — no badge needed — from across a parking lot or across 80 years of history.
The Jeep is one of those vehicles.
I owned a 1978 CJ-7. Dark green hardtop. Air conditioning. A joy to drive every single time. I've owned a lot of vehicles. I still think about that one.
Born Out of Necessity:
In June 1940, the U.S. Army solicited bids from 135 automakers for a quarter-ton "light reconnaissance vehicle." Only three responded: Bantam, Willys, and Ford. What came out of that competition was the Willys MB — rugged, lightweight, built to go anywhere. Widely regarded as "America's workhorse," it has been called "probably the most successful utility vehicle ever made." Jeep (Wikipedia)
Nobody agrees on where the name "Jeep" came from — the military slang, the Popeye cartoon, the phonetic "GP" — and honestly, that mystery is part of the charm.
The CJ-7:
The 1978 CJ-7 was one of the first vehicles to successfully blend on-road comfort with off-road capability, setting a standard for future SUVs and crossovers. At the time, I just thought it was a great truck. Looking back, I was driving a piece of history. Later editions even carried a factory dash plaque reading: "Last of a great breed, this collector's edition CJ ends an era that began with the legendary Jeep of World War II." (Metrommp; The Jeep Database)
That says it all.
Still the Best Place to Find One:
The U.S. remains one of the best places in the world to source a Jeep — vintage CJ or latest Wrangler. If you're importing one from Dallas or Saint Paul, the logistics matter. Port of export, vehicle age, compliance — it all affects how the deal should be structured.
That's exactly what we help with at Bon Trade International. Drop me a DM.
