June is national PTSD awareness month. You can wear teal to show your support for PTSD.
What is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)?
The prevalence of PTSD and other mental disorders is high in conflict-affected settings (3). PTSD may develop following exposure to an extremely threatening or horrific event or series of events. It is characterised by all of the following: 1) re-experiencing the traumatic event or events in the present (intrusive memories, flashbacks, or nightmares); 2) avoidance of thoughts and memories of the event(s), or avoidance of activities, situations, or people reminiscent of the event(s); and 3) persistent perceptions of heightened current threat. These symptoms persist for at least several weeks and cause significant impairment in functioning. Effective psychological treatment exists.
Avoidance symptoms include:
* Staying away from places, events, or objects that are reminders of the traumatic experience
* Avoiding thoughts or feelings related to the traumatic event
Avoidance symptoms may cause people to change their routines. For example, some people may avoid driving or riding in a car after a serious car accident.

April is National Stress Awareness Month, dedicated to raising awareness about the causes and effects of stress while encouraging open conversations about mental health. This month highlights effective coping strategies and emphasizes the importance of managing stress. Unchecked stress can contribute to various mental and physical health issues, including anxiety, depression, headaches, digestive problems, and even heart disease.
A nationwide mental health resource is NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, which provides support, education, and advocacy for individuals affected by mental health conditions.
