Public school educators need time, trust, and professional autonomy to do their jobs well.
That’s the message educators in the Appoquinimink School District delivered to their school board this week as their local union and district administrators enter a third month of contract negotiations.
While contract talks typically focus on worker pay, the Appoquinimink School District is currently mired in a financial crisis of its own making, leaving educators with little choice but to fight for better working conditions.
Backed by dozens of district employees, Appoquinimink Education Association President Steve Byers on Tuesday presented his school board with a petition signed by nearly 600 district teachers, counselors, nurses, social workers, psychologists, educational diagnosticians, and related service providers – all seeking protected professional time and the power to determine how that time is used.
“Students benefit when educators have adequate time to plan instruction, analyze student data, collaborate with colleagues, communicate with families, complete required documentation, and engage in professional growth,” he told the board. “When educators are trusted as professionals to exercise judgment over how that time is used, schools become stronger and more effective.”
We stand with AEA in their push for more time to fulfill their professional responsibilities!
Together, we’re stronger! Together, our voices will be heard!

Every LGBTQIA+ student deserves a public school where they feel safe, seen and free to be themselves, just like every LGBTQIA+ educator deserves a union that advocates for them.
That’s why union educators from Seaford to Brandywine joined together this weekend to celebrate our students, our families, and our communities at the 29th Annual Delaware Pride Fest in Dover.
Together, we are stronger!
Together, we're building a brighter future for ALL Delawareans!

Congratulations to the Colonial Paraprofessional Association for holding an outstanding end of year celebration at Stewart’s Brewing this week!
More than 80 union members were on hand as CPA President Jozette Hartsfield honored her predecessor and incoming DSEA President Tameka Mays. CPA then turned around and honored Jozette for her 19 years of service in the Colonial School District. They also thanked state Senator Nicole Poore for her support. And several members walked away with some great giveaways!.
