Global Semiconductor Market to Surpass $1.5 Trillion by 2030, Driven by AI — TSMC Forecast

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, the world’s leading contract chipmaker, projects that the global semiconductor industry will exceed $1.5 trillion by 2030, significantly surpassing its earlier $1 trillion forecast. This outlook was shared in advance of its upcoming technology symposium.

Key Growth Drivers:

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) are expected to dominate the market, contributing approximately 55% of total revenue. Smartphones will account for 20%, while automotive applications are projected to contribute 10%, underscoring the expanding role of semiconductors across industries.

Capacity Expansion & Advanced Technologies

TSMC is accelerating its production capabilities through 2025 and 2026, with plans to develop nine phases of wafer fabrication plants (fabs) alongside advanced packaging facilities by 2026.

The company anticipates a substantial ramp-up in production of its most advanced 2-nanometer and next-generation A16 process technologies, forecasting an impressive 70% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2026 to 2028.

Additionally, its advanced packaging technology, CoWoS (Chip-on-Wafer-on-Substrate)—critical for AI chip manufacturing, including those designed by NVIDIA Corporation—is expected to grow at a CAGR exceeding 80% between 2022 and 2027.

Demand for AI accelerator wafers is projected to surge dramatically, increasing 11-fold from 2022 to 2026, reflecting the exponential rise of AI-driven workloads.

Global Expansion Strategy

United States (Arizona):
TSMC’s first fabrication plant is already operational. Equipment installation for the second fab is scheduled for the second half of 2026, while construction of a third facility is underway. Plans for a fourth fab and the site’s first advanced packaging unit are set to commence this year.
The company expects a 1.8x year-on-year increase in output by 2026, with manufacturing yields comparable to those in Taiwan.

Japan:
The first fab is in mass production, focusing on 22nm and 28nm technologies. Due to strong demand, plans for the second fab have been upgraded to support 3nm technology, highlighting a strategic shift toward more advanced nodes.

Germany:
Construction of the European fab is progressing on schedule. Initial production will focus on 28nm and 22nm nodes, with future expansion planned for 16nm and 12nm technologies.

Europe’s top AI company, Mistral AI, has secured $830 million in fresh debt financing to acquire 13,800 advanced chips from Nvidia, fueling the development of a major AI data center near Paris. The move signals Europe’s accelerating push to scale AI infrastructure and compete with global leaders like the U.S. and China.
The funding round—set for official announcement Monday—marks Mistral’s first-ever debt raise, highlighting rising investor confidence in Europe’s AI ecosystem. The company is positioning itself to challenge dominant tech giants such as Microsoft, Google, and Amazon in both cloud computing and AI services.
The financing was backed by a consortium of major global banks, including BNP Paribas, Crédit Agricole CIB, HSBC, and MUFG. The flagship data center, located in Bruyères-le-Châtel, is expected to go live in Q2 2026.
Mistral selected the site in early 2025 and has since accelerated its infrastructure ambitions. The company recently unveiled plans for a second data center in Sweden and aims to secure 200 megawatts of AI capacity across Europe by 2027.
CEO Arthur Mensch emphasized that scaling infrastructure is essential to maintaining European AI sovereignty and innovation leadership.
