UK Special Boat Service and 1st SFOD D operators in Tarin Kowt, 2002, working one of the highest priority manhunts of the entire opening phase of the GWOT. The hunt for Mullah Mohammed Omar, the founder and supreme leader of the Taliban, who had vanished into the Afghan countryside as the regime collapsed.

Tarin Kowt sits in Uruzgan Province, Omar’s tribal heartland and the place he was most likely to be hiding or moving through. By early 2002 the conventional war was effectively over. The Taliban government was gone. What remained was a manhunt across mountain valleys, mud walled compounds, and tribal networks that didn’t talk to outsiders.

SBS and CAG worked the same target. Same intel cycle, same compounds on different nights, same enemy network being squeezed from both ends of the UKSF and JSOC partnership that would define the next twenty years.

They never got Omar. He died of illness in 2013, his location and fate concealed from his own movement for years. But the hunt itself shaped the playbook the coalition would use across the rest of the war.
