If you have a child or client that refuses to have bowel movements in the toilet, SAVE THIS POST.

It is common for children to prefer to have their bowel movement in their pull up, diaper, or even underwear. Here are some tips you can begin implementing to encourage them to have their BMs in the toilet.

1. Staying calm is very important (and I know not always easy). Resorting to harsh words or punishment may cause the child to feel scared to go at all and they end up holding it. This will only lead to more problems. Staying cool and calm also helps to not create unnecessary power struggles.

2. By knowing when your child is more likely to have a BM, you can set them up for success by being near their bathroom of choice and where they feel most comfortable. Message me if you want a habit/toilet training data sheet.

3. Encouraging time to sit on the toilet is key, especially if you have a male who is standing to urinate. Sitting and relaxing on the toilet are necessary. Try new activities or even sitting backwards if they’re smaller.

4. Increasing hydration will allow for more opportunities to practice urinating but also means more time sitting on the toilet. Increased hydration will also allow for more comfortable BMs. From my observations, it doesn’t seem like most kids drink enough water so this is good all around.

5. Ah, yes. The key to nearly all behavior changes. Rewards. And they must be mind blowing and saved for toilet training. This doesn’t mean go spend a lot of money. Think fun. Examples include blowing out a candle, FaceTiming friends and family, small wrapped toys, etc.

Recently, the toilet training aspect of my consulting business has really taken off. I had no idea there was a such a need. What I learned......it is NOT just the child getting toilet trained that needs resources, these parents do as well. I have partnered up with an expert in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and the program, aka bootcamp, we are offering parents is well rounded and supportive, not to mention getting wonderful feedback and RESULTS. More exciting things to share soon!
