ACA has compiled the following resources to help you assist clients in navigating our post-election world. While counselors have always addressed issues of bullying, intolerance, and conflict in their daily work, a spike in these client concerns may present new challenges. We hope this information helps you hit the ground running with insights and inspiration for addressing the very real needs of clients and students, while fulfilling the mandate put forth by the ACA Code of Ethics to promote the welfare of those we serve.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU HAVE NO WORDS
Are you at a loss for words today?
I know I have been. No matter your politics, there's no doubt that yesterday's election had profound emotional effects on our country, and inevitably on ourselves and our clients. Maybe you share this same loss for the right words today.
As therapists faced with our clients' pain, being without words can feel pretty deflating. We so long to know what to say and how to heal pain. On most days, we've got that covered.
Then there are days like today. Days when there's not much to say. Or, when you know there's actually A LOT to say, but you haven't yet worked your way through your own emotion to know exactly how to help without spilling your own emotional messiness... yet here you are with a full day of clients scheduled.
What am I doing on a day like today? I'm hearkening back to those earliest of helping skills. LISTENING.
Active, empathetic, reflective, and peaceful LISTENING.
It's a gift, isn't it -- to be truly heard. It's a beautiful and empowering skill we can offer our clients today. On days like today, when I feel I have nothing to offer, I offer my active ears. And I give back the gift of my client's own message. One they've delivered in trust and vulnerability and one I can hold and offer back, earnestly and carefully wrapped in empathy.
So what do I say, when I feel at a loss for words? I offer my client's words. I hear them. I embrace them. I reflect them. And I wait patiently to process them.
It's the gift we are uniquely equipped to offer today. And perhaps it's the one most needed.
