Arsenic, a groundwater contaminant originating from soils and rock, poses health risks to many Minnesotans who get their drinking water from private wells.

Freshwater and the Mayo Clinic are partnering to provide free well testing for arsenic in eight southern Minnesota counties (Rice, Steele, Freeborn, Waseca, Faribault, Blue Earth, Watonwan, and Martin) with funding from the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund.

So, how common is arsenic in southern Minnesota? As shown in this map, arsenic in the 8-county project area was detected in up to 84 percent of new wells (varying by county) since 2008. And because it is odorless and tasteless, testing is the only way to know if well water is safe to drink.
