MN was the first state in the US to approve straw bale within the building code as of this July.
I’ve got a consult this afternoon for a new straw bale house in the summer of ‘27 so I’m brushing up on my technical info and code regs.

R-50 and earthen plaster walls? Yes please.

Back in Proctor today to treat the remaining Buckthorn with Triclopoyr. Triclopyr is a systemic, selective herbicide that acts as a synthetic auxin (growth hormone) mimic, causing uncontrollable growth, stem twisting, and curling in broadleaf and woody plants until they die.

I'm utilizing an amines formulation mixed 1:4 with water and also containing a blue dye and applied to the cambium layer of the stump after being cut to ground level. I'm using a paint marker to strategically apply instead of a foliar spray to limit the amount of drift and leeching into ground water as its highly mobile in soil.

While I'm generally against using herbacides as a general practice, the ability to apply to a stump in a low exposure systematic fashion makes it a worthwhile effort over manual removal.

Just got a beautiful load of Norway and Scotch pine woodchips from Chip Drop for a new project in Duluth kicking off soon. It’ll help build slightly acidic soils which will be great for the blueberries we have in mind for the site. More to come!

Get in touch for a consult to see what we can do with your space.

Started on phase one of a new project north of Cambridge today. We’re handling the excess water coming off the roof and diverting it from the foundation.
This is the first part of the effort to prepare the space for two sheet mulched garden beds filled with native plants that will help accentuate the entrance to the house. That’ll be phase two of the project, kicking off within a few weeks.

Don’t hesitate to reach out for a consult and see how we can help you handle water moving through your property and best utilize it to create a beautiful garden space to appreciate for years to come.

It’s a beautiful thing to breathe new life into what was once considered trash. Swing on down to the Roots Market today and we can chat about salvaging old-growth wood from the dumpster with LumberStash!

Uppfinna aka Erik, the Duluth Lumberstash guy is fixing up his sweet old boat “Run Amok”. He salvaged the new White Pine mast from a 100 year old Superior, WI barn….. If I was a beam in a Superior, WI barn, it would be a dream come true to become a mast and sail on the biggest most beautiful lake. I could write a children’s book about the life of that White Pine. It grew from a seedling in a pristine old growth forest, held up a barn for 100 years, then was rescued to go sailing on the big lake.

Back in Proctor today for the first round of maintenance to the space that we planted last fall. First up is to take inventory of the area after about six months, then a plan was devised on how to best tackle the issues at hand.
We’re playing mostly a supportive role this year as the roots take hold and become established which means our major tasks are knocking down any tall grasses and horsetails that have grown in and started shading out our seedlings. We’ll continue to monitor the progress throughout the summer and tend to it as needed to achieve the best results.
(Also, I said Meadow Buttercup but after review, I think it’s Hispid Buttercup)
We’re also adding another yard of crushed bluestone from my friends over at Duluth Dirt for the path to help build it up a bit and will be strategically applying an additional round of herbicide to buckthorn that was cut down last season.

Let’s get in touch and create your sacred space, book a consult today at https://www.uppfinna.com
