Our newest use of a shipping container. Ore to Earth is a sculptural tunnel made entirely of welded and recycled steel, crafted from a reclaimed shipping container. As bikers and pedestrians pass through, they travel a corridor of contrasts: moon and sun, stillness and motion, metal and wilderness. Featuring reliefs of mountains, rivers, and trees alongside three-dimensional sculptures of a rabbit, a fish, and a deer, the installation invites reflection on the resilience of nature and the legacy of industry. The rusted steel surface honors Durango’s mining and railroading roots, a nod to the grit and labor that built the region. At the same time, cutouts and sculptures celebrate the living world that thrives around us — wildlife adapting to human-made spaces and finding sanctuary in forgotten corners. From one side of the tunnel to the other, the work transitions from moonlit peaks over tranquility to sunlit currents of motion — a symbolic journey through time, progress, and resiliency."
