I’ve come to realize, the older I get the faster time slips away. Summer is in full swing, kids are out of school, families are planning last-minute trips to escape the daily grind. It’s easy to get lost in everything that life throws your way, but we’re coming up on an important election on June 28, and I want to share some thoughts on why this is such an important time.
As a county we have experienced record growth, roughly 9% from 2010-2020. I’d argue that’s a low estimate and we have seen more growth, especially in the last few years. With this comes challenges, and those challenges are becoming more and more evident.
I’ve had the opportunity to speak with so many folks across the county and the number one complaint is our roads. I agree – the roads are an issue and the most visible responsibility of a county commissioner. But road infrastructure, whether it’s maintaining existing roads or investing in much needed improvements, requires strategic planning.
We lack strategic and tactical planning across the board, whether a strategic 8-year plan on road improvements and “big picture” growth, or the tactical day-to-day maintenance that’s needed keep the roads drivable, across the district, for everyone. It’s shameful that you have to wait until an election year to see any measurable improvements across the county.
We’re also at a crossroads with our money. Budgets are limited, this isn’t anything new, but we have an opportunity to make an impact. The county received $9,322,466 from the federal government as part of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). Some of the money has already been committed or spent, but we have until 12/31/2024 to obligate this money and another two years to expend it by 12/31/2026. We need to be strategic with the plan for, and use of these funds. This is an opportunity that we haven’t been given in a generation.
Roads aren’t the only issue. We have seen an increase in illegal trash dumping. Roads without much needed signage – roads missing speed limit signs, missing weight-limit signs. Roads do not have adequate ditches for runoff and drainage. We need more funding for first responders, much needed renovations across county facilities, and so much more.
Our county commissioners are instruments of the people that elect them to office, to which they must serve – the people. They should be open to feedback, debate, constantly learn, and engage with the public. They should discuss with peers across the state to learn what has worked well, and what hasn’t, and apply those lessons learned to our county.
I’d like to leave you with a quote from Thomas Jefferson – “We do not have government by the majority. We have government by the majority who participate.” Please participate! Vote to have your voice heard on June 28 and ensure we have the right candidates elected to do the work of the people, to which they serve.
All the best,
Scott Goad
