Evening history. Durham County. Random find. Shown are cardiac survivor Earl Mangum (left) and Lebanon Fire Department Fire Chief Chris McDonald. They appeared in the Herald-Sun on December 26, 1991, and are pictured with the department's first ambulance.

On November 18, 1990, Earl Mangum, 59, suffered a heart attack at Mount Sylvan Baptist Church. He was attending a meeting, along with dentist Jeff Cecil and nurse Diane Goodwin.

They started CPR on Mangum until the firefighters arrived. They used a defibrillator to restore a regular heartbeat. And after a 35-day stay at Duke Hospital, Mangum was discharged on Christmas Eve.

In October 1991, LVFD became the last of the Durham County's five VFDs to add an ambulance. But only it and Parkwood also served satellite bases for Durham County Emergency Medical Services. For north and south coverage, respectively.

DCEMS paramedics staffed the two stations from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. [ With DCEMS riding the VFD ambulances? Or their own? ] The rest of the time, LVFD and PVFD staffed their ambulances with "paid professional" EMTs. As did the other three volunteer fire departments, at all other times.
