This Memorial Day, we honor the Black history too often left out of the conversation. In 1865, formerly enslaved Black people organized one of the earliest known Memorial Day commemorations by honoring Union soldiers who died fighting for freedom.
Their act of remembrance helped shape the holiday into what we know today as Memorial Day.
