This is the “Chinese Finger Trap” of OCD. The more that you fight your thoughts, the less control you gain.
The more that you try to block your thoughts, the louder they become. Engaging in compulsions to try to avoid the pain and struggling that is a part of the human experience often *causes* us more pain in the resistance.
Acceptance, acknowledgment, and eventually disengaging with the triggering thoughts and emotions is the beginning of recovery.
