After leading two training dives, a longtime rebreather instructor lost consciousness at the surface.
An hour later, he awoke alone at 148 feet to the sound of his beeping dive computer, still breathing from his rebreather.
He credits a mouthpiece retaining strap (MRS), which kept the breathing loop in place, with saving his life.

2051 Sea Odyssey is a STEM outreach initiative by DAN, DEEP, UNC-Chapel Hill, and the University of Utah, funded by the U.S. Office of Naval Research.
Through a docuseries and design challenges, the program aims to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers in undersea research. The docuseries’ first episode introduces the vision behind 2051 Sea Odysseyand teams driving innovation beneath the surface.

Wearing earplugs might seem like a simple way to protect your ears. But when it comes to diving, they can do more harm than good.
During descent, divers must equalize pressure in the middle ear. Traditional earplugs create an air space that your anatomy cannot equalize. As pressure increases, the earplug can be pushed deeper into the ear canal while the eardrum is forced outward, potentially causing serious injury, including barotrauma. (Vented earplugs aren't a reliable solution; if the vent becomes blocked by debris like earwax, they can create the same risk.)
❌ DAN does not endorse the use of earplugs for diving. Depending on the issue, safer alternatives may be available.
