PhD Plus Summer Workshop #1:
Improv for Engineers with Zach Ward

PhD Plus is excited to announce a lunch and learn workshop to discuss how to think on your feet, read the audience, and become a dynamic speaker and listener.

Chapel Hill native and proud Carolina graduate, Zach Ward has been performing and directing comedy for over 20 years.

Zach owns DSI where he serves as Executive Producer. He also serves as Executive Producer and Artistic Director for the North Carolina Comedy Arts Festival. He has received critical acclaim from the Chicago Reader and the Chicago Tribune for his performance with DUAL EXHAUST (Critic's Choice, INDY PICK, Top 10 "Most Influential Comedy Duos of the Past Decade") and THE BEATBOX (Critic's Choice, Best Bet, "Top 5 Latenight Shows in Chicago"). Zach can currently be seen performing with MISTER DIPLOMAT and on the road at theaters around the country.

PhD Plus is excited to announce a lunch and learn workshop to discuss how to build a solid foundation from recruitment to traditional growth patterns, non-traditional financing, and how to develop successful management skills.

Richard West has helped found 4 life-science start-up companies. Currently, he is the co-founder and CEO of Baebies Inc., a company aiming to expand newborn screening for more conditions and to developing countries. In 2013, Mr. West and his team sold Advanced Liquid Logic to Illumina for $96M; the company was a Duke spinout that developed lab-on-a-chip technology and products for research tools and diagnostic markets. Prior to Advanced Liquid Logic, Mr. West was founder and CEO of TriVirix, a venture-funded medical equipment contract manufacturer that he and his team grew to over 500 employees, and founder and CEO of Adigy, a medical wireless company. Mr. West has an engineering degree from Duke, an MBA, and over 15 years of experience as a health-tech CEO.

The first workshop in the PhD Plus Spring semester will cover the transition from graduate student to working professional. The panel consists of recent PhDs who founded or work for well-established start-up companies. They will discuss topics from management style, working in dynamic teams to balancing projects, deadlines, and funding sources.
