Shen Wei Dance Arts & Guangdong Modern Dance Company
MindScape

American Dance Festival brings Shen Wei Dance Arts and Guangdong Modern Dance Company together for the U.S. premiere of MindScape, the first co-production between the two companies. Choreographer Shen Wei, who works as both a painter and a dancer, builds the piece around Chinese philosophy and the practice of self-cultivation, using movement to explore how contemplation shapes the body and the body shapes contemplation. Stick around after Friday's performance for American Dance Festival's season closing party at Parizäde, where dancers from both companies join the celebration over a buffet dinner and dancing.

Whether you're a longtime ADF regular or dance isn't usually on your weekend list, this one is worth the trip: two companies dancing together for the first time, built around ideas most of us only sit with at 2 a.m. Come for the premiere, stay for the party marking the close of another festival season.
