The root systems of coniferous trees differ from those of deciduous trees. While the equipment to remove their stumps depends on the method of removal and size of the tree, it is easier to remove coniferous stumps.

Most modern tree stump grinders use a system of hydraulic cylinders to remove the stump. The cylinder pushes a cutter wheel with carbide teeth through the stump in order to cut the wood into manageable pieces.
