I drove the new Rivian R2 in Park City, Utah, and this is the SUV that could take Rivian from cool EV startup to mainstream American success story.

It starts under $50,000, offers up to 345 miles of estimated range, has available dual-motor all-wheel drive, Tesla Supercharger access, a drop-down rear glass, clever storage, room for dogs, kids, gear, groceries, and probably a small emotional support kayak.

But the real story is bigger than horsepower and range.

Can Rivian build enough of these, price them right, and finally go shoulder to shoulder with Tesla?
