It is often compared to the guitar due to its similar appearance and the fact that they are both chordophones. However, there are several key differences that set the Cuatro apart from the guitar.

Firstly, the Cuatro typically has four strings, whereas the guitar usually has six strings. This difference in string count greatly affects the sound and playability of the instruments. The Cuatro’s four strings are usually tuned in pairs, with the two outer strings tuned in octaves and the two inner strings tuned in unison.
