Spy? Or Soldier of Fortune?
Before he died in 1923, Sam Dreben was known in El Paso as a respectable and well-to-do businessman.
But before that, he led the daring life of an adventurer, soldier of fortune and spy who fought in the Spanish-American War, the Boxer Rebellion and as a mercenary in Central America. While in the U.S. Army, he was stationed at Fort Bliss and became an expert machine gunner.
And that’s how he came to fight in the Mexican Revolution, worked as a scout for the Punitive Expedition, smuggled arms for Pancho Villa and spied for a German agent operating on the border.
And after all that, he fought in World War I, winning medals and the praise of Gen. John J. Pershing.
On the Feb. 19 broadcast of “The El Paso History Radio Show,” hosts Jackson Polk and Melissa Sargent talk with historian Heribert von Feilitzsch about the perilous life and times of Sam Dreben and others who lived as soldiers of fortune during those turbulent times.

Bhutan in El Paso
The Kingdom of Bhutan lies about 8,000 miles from El Paso. But Bhutanese students studying at the University of Texas at El Paso feel right at home, thanks to UTEP’s distinctive architecture.
Since 1917, many UTEP buildings have been designed in the traditional style of Bhutan. And in 2015, the campus received an authentic Bhutanese building – the Lhakhang – that was erected in the center of UTEP’s renovated Centennial Plaza.
On the Feb. 5 broadcast of “The El Paso History Radio Show,” hosted by Jackson Polk and Melissa Sargent, we find out more about UTEP’s Bhutanese connections from Daniel Carey-Whelan, director of the Centennial Museum and Chihuahuan Desert Gardens. He’ll also explain how it’s all traced back to a 1914 issue of National Geographic.
