The fourth of April 2019 the JR ROTC contingent from Cimarron High School in Las Vegas came all the way to SMC for a visit to the SMC Heritage Center and to receive some in depth mentoring from SMC military members on life in the United States Air Force working in the field of military space. Carla Rosepryor from Public Affairs expertly organized the visit with Maj Jamal Williams from Cimarron High. Capt Ha from Remote Sensing offered a historical perspective on the operation of the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program, showcasing the beautiful DMSP satellite bus on display in the Gordon Conference Center and his own experiences in the field. Lt Gouri from Global Positioning discussed the path that led to her engineering career in the Air Force and fielded multiple questions on her experiences. Lt Nguyen from Advanced Systems discussed his career and also participated in the round table discussions that morning. Then the group visited the SMC Heritage Center to immerse themselves in the world of military space and the rich history of its accomplishments. If you would like to do the same, email [email protected] to start planning your visit.

Girl Scout Troop 3331, brought to visit SMC by Lt Col Shibata, stop to have their picture taken with Capt Canaday while on a trip to the SMC Heritage Center to survey an artifact from one of the many early military space programs. They learned from Milsatcom's Capt Canaday about the innovative early space reconnaissance program which used a deorbiting bucket to return film to earth for photo interpretation in the 1960's. The students were also able to touch and examine up close and personal, a piece of returned space debris...Lots to see and learn! Then after the SMC Heritage Center tour, and after viewing the 9 foot statue of General Bernard a. Schriever...father of military space (donated to SMC by Air Force Association's Chapter 147) Lt Col Porter and his team of volunteers offered a STEM workshop...cool stuff, robotics, rockets and more!! Interested in bringing your group? Email us at [email protected]. See you there!
