After graduating art school with a degree in illustration I worked several jobs… graphic/web designer by day, retail in the evenings and weekends. I took odd jobs off Craigslist, cash jobs like handing out event flyers outside of bars in the middle of the night. I was hungry. And I was young. And it worked. Those jobs paid the bills. Eventually I had my own graphic design business in Boston which I enjoyed greatly. Still do.

I think part of me always wondered though… would I paint again? I mean, regularly paint again?

Flash forward 23 years and here I am.

In ways I attribute my return to painting to my mom. I fell back into painting when I lost mom 7 years ago, I was grieving and hurting. I picked up my paintbrush again and it turned out that painting was my key. Those early still life paintings became conversations with her. Painting helped me heal. It brought me a special kind of joy. The arts can do that, it’s truly remarkable.

Not a moment goes by that I’m not grateful to be painting. It is not the usual career path, and can be fraught with much uncertainty and doubt, but the joy it brings is worth it all. The artists and creators that I know personally are some of the bravest and most hard working people I know, putting themselves out there even if what they do goes against the norm. It’s NOT a hobby for many of us. It can be a profession, and although it takes a TON of work to make it “work” the creative arts are very rewarding.
