Cathy Guisewite and her cartoon Cathy, 1982.

This photograph from 1982 shows cartoonist Cathy Guisewite standing beside her famous creation, Cathy, the comic strip character who came to symbolize the modern working woman’s daily struggles. First published in 1976, Cathy was one of the few comics at the time written and drawn by a woman, and it became a cultural touchstone across newspapers in the United States.

The strip followed Cathy as she navigated career pressures, relationships, dieting, and the expectations placed on women in an era of changing gender roles. Through humor and self-awareness, Guisewite gave a voice to the anxieties and triumphs of women balancing independence and societal expectations. Her work resonated deeply with readers who saw themselves reflected in Cathy’s mix of determination and vulnerability.

By the early 1980s, Cathy appeared in more than 1,200 newspapers and earned Guisewite a devoted following. Her comic became a time capsule of late twentieth century womanhood, marking the intersection of feminism, humor, and everyday life.

Added fact: Cathy Guisewite won the National Cartoonists Society’s Reuben Award in 1992, becoming one of the few women ever to receive it. When the strip ended in 2010 after thirty four years, it had run over 10,000 installments.
