SB 627 (also known as the "No Secret Police Act") was unfortunately passed recently by California lawmakers. The bill bans law enforcement officers from wearing face coverings while on duty and makes violations of the bill a misdemeanor. The risks this poses to our officers is substantial, as they would not be able to utilize certain personal protective equipment. State Senator Scott Wiener was quoted stating "Law enforcement should never be easily confused with the guy in the ski mask robbing a liquor store", despite the fact that officers are already required to wear agency uniforms, nameplates, badges, and/or other devices that clearly display 'POLICE' making them easily identifiable. A face covering, despite Wiener's differing opinion, would not impede that. The bill is now in Governor Newsom's hands to uphold or veto. We encourage all concerns and objections to be voiced to your legislators, and pray that safety and transparency in policing can go hand in hand without unecessary laws being imposed.

** EGPOA is also very disappointed in our elected officials who either voted in support of this bill, or abstained from voting entirely. Abstention from voting has as bad of an impact as voting yes. Politicians seek our endorsement every two years and we as a union use our best judgement in who we support, as we know our community members will follow our lead on which candidate they would want to support as well. We endorse those whose standards we believe align with ours when it comes to public safety, however it appears as though our previous endorsement was made in error and we will be reconsidering our options in the future. Aside from this, we appreciate all of the support we do receive from our local City Mayor’s office and council members.
