Turning 50: A Journey of Art, Aging, and Transformation

Fifty. A milestone, a threshold, a reckoning. For some, it arrives with celebration; for others, with a quiet contemplation of the years behind and the years ahead. For me, turning 50 is a deeply layered experience—one woven with art, healing, and an ever-evolving sense of self.

The Universal and the Personal: Aging as Transformation

Aging is a universal human experience, yet no two journeys through it are the same. Across cultures, we mark time with rituals—some celebratory, some solemn. In some societies, aging is revered; in others, it is something to resist. But no matter the framing, it is inevitable, and more importantly, it is transformative.

For me, 50 is not just a number—it is a testament to resilience. It is a reflection of every storm weathered, every lesson learned, and every piece of art that has poured from my hands in response to life’s trials and triumphs. My paintings tell the story of that journey, of chaos and balance, of light emerging from darkness. And as I cross this milestone, I see my art as a mirror of my evolution.

A Different Path: Motherhood at Midlife

One of the most defining aspects of my experience with aging is becoming a mother later in life. While many of my peers are stepping into grandparenthood, I am still navigating the world of school lunches, bedtime stories, and the endless wonder (and exhaustion) that comes with raising a child. At 43, just two months shy of turning 44, I welcomed my daughter into the world. It was a profound shift—not just in identity, but in how I viewed time itself.

Motherhood, at any age, is transformative. But stepping into it at midlife has given me a unique perspective. I am raising a child with the wisdom of lived experience, with the knowledge of how fleeting time truly is. My journey as an artist and as a mother are deeply intertwined; both require patience, presence, and the ability to embrace imperfection. My daughter reminds me daily that growth is ongoing, that creativity is boundless, and that there is beauty in both the structured and the spontaneous.

Embracing Creativity as a Lifelong Companion

If my 20s and 30s were about striving and proving, my 40s were about unlearning—letting go of expectations, of rigid timelines, of external validation. And now, at 50, I find myself standing more firmly in who I am. Art has been my sanctuary through it all, a space where age does not limit, but rather deepens the work. The themes of my paintings—transformation, emotion, resilience—feel more relevant than ever.

As I step into this new decade, I am not seeking to reclaim youth, but rather to embrace the fullness of the present. I am more aware than ever that time is a gift, that creativity is an endless well, and that each year, each wrinkle, each brushstroke tells a story worth celebrating.

Fifty is not an end, nor a beginning. It is a continuation. And I plan to create, to grow, to mother, and to live as fully as ever—one fearless step, one fearless stroke, at a time.
