How long do you think this monumental Japanese temple bell can ring after a single strike?

Seconds?
One minute?
Longer?

For centuries, Japanese Bonshō temple bells were designed not just to make sound — but to create an experience. Their deep resonant tone was meant to travel across temple grounds, mountainsides, and villages, calling monks to prayer and marking the passage of time.

This extraordinary bronze bell was crafted by one of Japan’s most celebrated bell-making families, masters of an art form that required generations of knowledge in bronze casting, tuning, and proportion. The shape, wall thickness, and alloy all influence how long the sound continues to resonate after impact.

Unlike Western bells that swing, traditional Japanese temple bells are struck from the outside with a suspended wooden beam, producing the powerful low-frequency vibration these bells are famous for.

The result?
A sound you don’t just hear… you feel.
