The Safe & Stable Housing Fund at Coastal Community Foundation awarded a grant to the North County LGBTQ Resource Center: Unicorn Homes for their dedication and the impact of Unicorn Homes supporting LGBTQ+ youth and young adults in San Diego County who are unhoused or at risk of homelessness by providing safe, family-centered living spaces through a network of certified foster families. Through its expansion project, Unicorn Village, the program offers transitional housing and expert, LGBTQ+ informed support services for transition-aged youth, addressing key issues such as family rejection and lack of social support, while fostering acceptance and safety across the community through specialized training and service delivery.

The Coastal Community Foundation would like to shout out our final Mental Health Grant recipient for this grant cycle. The Boys and Girls Club of San Marcos has shown true dedication to making an impact in the community and specifically in mental health. With this grant money, they will be able to continue to fund and enhance their Wellness Program. This program allows youth to experience activities from cooking to pet therapy! We are so honored to be a part of supporting this program that will ultimately enable youth to engage in activities that promote health and success.

Today we are highlighting Evan Ballows. He has been chosen by Eric Hall and the Coastal Community Foundation to receive one of the Eric Hall Scholarships through our scholarship program. Evan has just completed his first year at UCLA and could not have been more accomplished. He has not only excelled in his major, Civil Engineering but has also made an effort to get involved on campus. Evan is a member of UCLA’s chapter of ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) and is especially involved in the Seismic Design group. He has shown great involvement within the School of Engineering and Applied Science but has also had the opportunity to serve his community through an organization called Swipe Out Hunger at UCLA. This club is dedicated to fighting student food insecurity and has been able to participate in quarterly “swipe” food drives where they collect unused student meal swipes and donate those to food-insecure students. He also greatly enjoys gleaning at local farmers markets, where they collect leftover food for the local food pantry.
The Coastal Community Foundation and Eric Hall are beyond proud of Evan and all of his success during his first year at UCLA! We know that Evan will truly make an impact on his community.
Safe & Stable Housing and Hand to Hand grant applications are live! We look forward to your applications.
