Congratulations to the winners of The Coast News' 2026 Teen Writing Contest!

We were proud to celebrate this year's winners during a special recognition ceremony at the Encinitas Library, where family, friends and community leaders gathered to honor three outstanding young writers from North County.

🥇 First Place ($1,000): Quade Kelley
🥈 Second Place ($500): Emma Lauren Benas
🥉 Third Place ($100): Amelia Seibert

This year's contest challenged 11th- and 12th-grade students to write on the theme, "A Moment That Changed Me," inspiring deeply personal essays about the moments that shape who we are.

We were honored to welcome Encinitas Mayor Bruce Ehlers, contest sponsor Melissa Huk of Ms. Oceanside Real Estate, WriteAway Books founder Rob Weinberg and local author Dietmar E. Rothe, who joined The Coast News Publisher Chris Kydd and Managing Editor Jordan P. Ingram in celebrating the incredible talent, creativity and courage these students demonstrated through their writing.

A heartfelt thank you to Melissa Huk of Ms. Oceanside Real Estate for sponsoring this year's contest and helping us encourage the next generation of storytellers.

Congratulations again to Quade, Emma and Amelia on this well-deserved recognition. We can't wait to see where your writing takes you next!
