Las Salineras de Maras, or Maras Salt Mines, is a stunning landscape of thousands of salt mines within the famed Sacred Valley.

The pinkish hue seen comes from the natural elements in the water, as the saltwater comes from an underground spring. When the sun beats down on the mountain, the heat produces salt crystals.

The salt harvesting tradition is still practiced today and dates back to pre-Inca times which you can witness upon visiting this unique landscape. Local families carefully harvest by scraping the salt crystals from the pond beds in order to sell as vendors at local markets.
