The Institute of Contemporary Art, San Diego (ICA San Diego]) is honored to be named a Summer 2021 grant recipient by The Conrad Prebys Foundation!

was most recently selected as an award recipient as a reflection of the balance between focus areas of personal interest to Conrad Prebys – including visual and performing arts, higher education, medical research, health care, youth development and animal conservation – and urgent needs resulting from the coronavirus pandemic.

Together with its inaugural grant cycle earlier this year, the Foundation has awarded more than
$90 million in grant funding in 2021 to deserving organizations that will positively impact the

The exhibition is a collection of artwork by 89 local artists, purchased by the City of San Diego () for the Civic Art Collection in support of the local arts community during the pandemic.

Christine Howard Sandoval () is our first Artist-in-Residence at and she will be exhibiting her work in the very first show of our 15th Season of Artist Residencies, which begins today in .

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

(b. 1975, Anaheim, California) is an interdisciplinary artist of Chalon Ohlone, Mexican, and Spanish ancestry.

The artist will explore the history of California Indigeneity and its relationship to Californian archives through a presentation of works on paper that emulate architectural motifs from Spanish mission architecture.

Inspired by historical etchings found in the Bancroft Library Archive, Howard Sandoval creates a series of adobe imprints on drawing paper created through the use of masking tape. As she removes and collects the adobe covered masking tape, the archive naturally assumes the forms of the mound viewable in the gallery.

In California, the archives embody a settlers' narrative of erasure but is also embedded with the seeds of Indigenous knowledge paramount to the reconstruction of Indigenous language, cultural practices, and relationships to the land. The use of adobe brings focus to the forced labor of Indigenous People in the construction of the missions, while also serving as a reminder of the symbiosis between land, Indigenous identity, and self determination across generations. Howard Sandoval works with the archive to trace the migration of her Chalon Ohlone ancestors, telling the story of her community, her family, and her coming home to California.

Now (2021) vs. Then (2020) - From Los Angeles to New York [ and then to where it currently resides on our Lux Art Institute grounds ], from welded metals to rock formations, Glacial Erratic [ by Season 14 Artist-in-Residence Beatriz Cortez () ] tells the story of both mineral and human migrations.

Conceived for the Frieze () LIFEWTR Sculpture Prize, the sculpture is composed of a steel frame and sheet metal. Evoking an ancient boulder, the shape of the rock that inspired originates from Nayarit in Mexico, which according to ancient traditions, was the origin of the world.

[ Originally ] placed in Rockefeller Center as if deposited there by a melted glacier (Photo 2) [ and afterwards placed on Lux Art Institute grounds in January 2021 as part of the collaborative residency with Candice Lin, rafa esparza, Kang Seung Lee, Pavithra Prasad, and Christian Tedeschi (Photo 1) ], the sculpture will [ continue to ] age as it is exposed to the elements: marking different planetary temporalities and making visible the ancient nature of migration.
