Lighting has changed the way we live in our own home.

Brian’s and my personal home was built in 1995, and like many homes from that era, it is full of 6" recessed cans. When we started updating our lighting, we chose a hybrid approach.

In some areas, we added Lutron fixtures where we wanted more targeted, architectural lighting — especially to highlight artwork, texture, and details that deserved better focus.

But we did not rip out every existing can.

Where it made sense, we kept the 6" cans and upgraded them with Ketra lamps. We also used magnetic chandelier-style fixtures over some of the existing cans to give them more of a pendant look without completely reworking the ceiling.

In decorative fixtures where it was compatible, we used Ketra bulbs. In other areas, like our dining nook chandelier, we left the existing fixture alone.

That is the point: intelligent lighting does not always have to be all-or-nothing.

We have a mix of Ketra and Rania lamps throughout the home, and we use the circadian lighting every single day. We notice a real difference. The daytime light is easier on our eyes when working, reading, or spending time on screens, and it helps the home feel more energizing and productive during the day. At night, the warmer scenes help the house calm down.

And yes — we have personally lived through the drywall dust of a ceiling remodel. We fully understand how invasive that process can be.

We love our architectural Ketra fixtures, but not every homeowner is ready to open ceilings, patch drywall, repaint, and turn the house into a construction zone.

For homes with existing 5" or 6" cans, there may be another path.

In many cases, we can evaluate whether compatible lamps, Ketra or Rania options, and intelligent lighting control can bring a completely new feeling to the home without replacing every fixture.

It is a way to use light almost like a paintbrush — adding warmth, color, focus, rhythm, and atmosphere to the architecture you already have.

And the scenes are what make it stick.

Because if creating the right atmosphere means turning on a whole bank of switches, most people simply will not do it. We wouldn’t either. But one-touch scenes like Goodnight, Morning, Entertain, Relax, or Work? Those get used constantly.

Lighting control changes the daily experience of a home.

It is not just about making rooms prettier, although it absolutely does that. It is about making the home easier to live in, easier to enjoy, and better aligned with the way people actually move through the day.

If your home has older recessed cans and the lighting feels dated, flat, or harsh, it may be worth seeing what is possible before assuming the only answer is a major ceiling remodel.

Sometimes, the home you already love just needs better light.

These guys....Now internally (thank you, Justin), referred to as our "Shighting Department". Our shades and lighting team have combined forces officially. Some of our most complex solutions are hatched up by this group, with beautiful results. This Lutron award belongs to all of them.

One common misconception about motorized shades is that you're locked into the fabric choice forever.

In many cases, that's simply not true.

If your needs change, your décor changes, or you realize you want more or less light control, we can often replace the shade fabric while keeping the existing shade hardware in place.

That's exactly what happened in this foothills home.

When the shades were originally installed, solar screen fabric made sense. Over time, the homeowners realized that the intense mountain sun coming into this bedroom was creating more light than they wanted, especially in the mornings.

Instead of replacing the entire shading system, we performed a fabric swap and converted the shades to a blackout fabric.

The result is better light control, improved sleeping conditions, and a room that works better for how they actually live today.

One of the benefits of professionally installed shading systems is flexibility. Your home evolves over time, and in many cases your shades can evolve with it.

Thinking about updating your window treatments? You may have more options than you realize.

This is what happens when the right team is involved from the very beginning.

Arched windows and doorways are a dream architecturally—but they can create real challenges for window treatments when they’re not planned for early.

By bringing integration into the conversation from day one, motorized shades become part of the design—not something added after the fact. The result is a clean, intentional look that complements the architecture instead of competing with it.

Here on the Front Range, it’s always a balance between protecting interiors from intense UV and preserving those incredible views. When that balance is solved upfront, homeowners get both—without compromise.

We’re seeing more architects and designers plan for this early, and it makes all the difference in the final result.

📍 Planning a build or remodel? Start the conversation early and get it right the first time.
